(U.S.; 95 min.) America Gonzales (Lymari Nadal, wife of executive producer Edward James Olmos) flees her abusive military husband (a very frightening Yancey Arias) in Puerto Rico to a job as a live-in housekeeper in suburban New York City. She rues leaving her daughter, but like Puerto Rico’s bond to the United States, America’s relation with her husband is precarious and wary. She loves the familiarity of her relatives in the Bronx. Sonia Fritz ably directs a variation on the Caribbean-to-East-Coast immigrant tale, to include not the antiquated “a woman’s place is in the home” but the perennial “an immigrant woman’s place is in someone else’s home.” (DH)
