Inspired by the Lantern Festivals of East Asia, the Lantern Run 5K celebrates Asian culture with a unique event that will stretch through downtown San Jose on May 16.

After a visit to Pingxi, Taiwan, director and founder of Lantern Run 5K , David Kao, was inspired to bring the colors and energy of the festival to San Jose as a family-fun run. Participants, dressed in neon colors and glow sticks run and walk down a lantern-lit 10th Street from the San Jose State Spartan Stadium and back to an after party featuring a DJ, drinks and snacks.

All ages are permitted to participate and 10 percent of the proceeds are donated to Shared Adventures, an organization that provides recreational opportunities to individuals with disabilities.

Traditionally, Lantern Festivals celebrate the end of the Lunar New Year. Lanterns are decorated with personal designs and released into the sky as a mix of tradition to let go of the old to accept the new and enjoy family.
