San Jose Skate, the last roller rink in the South Bay, will close in May, according to recent reports.
CBS reports skating rink owner Don Imwalle decided to close due to waning interest in skating and accompanying lower revenues.
“There are more people skating now than ever before, but they’re doing it on ice,” Imwalle told CBS.
The closure will leave some dedicated skaters homeless, including local roller derby team, Silicon Valley Roller Girls, which has practiced at San Jose Skate for the past seven years.
They team is attempting a crowding funding for a new venue.
The weekend of May 31 will be the last at San Jose Skate. A farewell party is in the offing.
