A single-story apartment fire in San Jose on Thursday night resulted in the evacuation of five tenants in nearby units.

At about 11:10 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to West Hedding and Chestnut streets on report of a burning unit in single-story apartment complex, San Jose fire Capt. Rob Brown said. Firefighters arrived at the scene and found heavy smoke pouring out of the unit’s kitchen window, according to Brown.

After forcing entry into the unit, firefighters determined that no residents were inside the fiery structure. However, Brown said, five other tenants in nearby units were temporarily evacuated.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire by 12:35 a.m., and all five tenants were permitted to return to their units. Brown estimated the fire to have caused $20,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Brown said the Red Cross would provide housing assistance to the affected resident.
