Firefighters responded to a three-alarm house fire near San Jose State University early Monday morning, a fire spokesman said.

A passerby called the fire department around 7 a.m. to report seeing flames at a two-story Victorian home in the 400 block of South Fifth
Street, San Jose fire Capt. Scott Kouns said.

Sixty-five firefighters responded, and had the blaze mostly controlled as of 7:40 a.m.

Kouns said the neighborhood around Fifth and East William streets has been shut down, and advised motorists to avoid the area.
