It is difficult to miss Communication Hill—the telephone tower that sits atop a 425-foot hill in south San Jose. AT&T knew that the tower would be a landmark and decided to do something about it. Instead of just putting up some Spartan utilitarian structure, they built something modern (for the 1970s) and appealing. Whether you like the design or not, you have to agree that it is no simple gash on the landscape.
In the almost four decades since it was built, a whole new neighborhood has been built around the tower—built, rather than sprung up. Lining the slopes of Communication Hill are townhouses, condos and detached single homes, most of which have a commanding view of southern Silicon Valley. It’s a relatively new neighborhood, so buyers can expect all the modern amenities in the homes found there.
The Carrara Condos, a midsize community that was first built in 2006, are all two-bedroom, two-bath units, reasonably priced between $309,000 and $360,000. Each unit is slightly different, depending on the original owners, but all have hardwood cabinets and granite countertops. They are spacious and airy, and they all have private balconies with a magnificent view. The complex itself offers all the amenities, including a spa, outdoor pool, gym and club room, all situated in a private courtyard.
Nearby, there’s a beautiful one-bedroom, 1.5-bath home at
322 Adeline Ave. The den/home office can easily be converted into
a second bedroom with the unit’s open floor plan.
You may as well be buying a new home. The original owners never actually lived in it, and the house is still in the same condition it was in when it featured as a model home for the area.
One of the outstanding features of this home is the designer kitchen, with its glistening hardwood floors and cabinets and exposed brick walls, giving a hint of the rustic in an ultramodern setting. All major appliances are also included. This brand-new unit, which still maintains its showcase appeal, can be had for $399,000.
There are also private homes on Communication Hill. For just $499,000, you can get a wonderful, two-bedroom, 2.5-bath home at 2202 Golden Crest. Although it is a new home, it has recently been repainted and carpeted, and the kitchen is newly remodeled. The entire house is light and spacious, with recessed lighting throughout. It even has its own two-car garage, and plenty of storage space. Both bedrooms are master suites, and each has a spacious walk-in closet.
