(Romania; 60 min.) Made for HBO Romania, this documentary profiles an outsider artist in the literal sense: Ion Barladeanu actually lived outside. Discovered by a Bucharest gallery owner, the vagabond Barladeanu is nurtured, made prosperous and taken to a Swiss exhibition. Still, the legacies of the past gnaw at him. The collage artist, whose superb work can be compared to Winston Smith and Jess, was confined in a mental hospital, perhaps because of the enemies he made during the old Communist regime, though Barladeanu is the first to admit he’s a troublesome alcoholic. The trip to Barladeanu’s village is a standout: it reveals the scale of the conflict between the artist and his parents, as well as the peace and charm of a traditional Balkan village. (RvB)
