A group of Saratoga businesses will host Foodie Fun on the Run, a food truck gathering Aug. 25 aimed at benefiting local charities. In addition to food, the event will include a mobile zoo of sorts (wash your hands before eating) with turtles, snakes, tarantulas and lizards. The event benefits the Youth Science Institute, a nonprofit organization that teaches nature-based education to some 30,000 children each year.

Previous Foodie Fun on the Run events have raised funds for local charities like Saratoga Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, West Valley Community Services and the Saratoga Senior Center. Food trucks coming to the August event include Sam’s Chowder Mobile, the Peruvian food truck Sanguchon, Waffle Amore and Chutney Mary’s.

Parking for the event will be available at 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. For more information, go the Saratoga Gateway Businesses Facebook page.

Tomato Time

Just as summer is nearing its end, summer tomatoes are coming on strong. To mark the occasion, Saratoga’s Sent Sovi is holding its fifth-annual heirloom tomato dinner on Aug. 30.

For the occasion, chef/owner Josiah Slone is preparing a multicourse, mainly vegetarian meal that includes a tomato-sake cocktail; an umami-loaded cold tomato and kombu soup; Yangon-style tomato and tea leaf salad; a lavender, shelling-bean and tomato “cassoulet”; yellow tomato granita; fried green tomato with 18-hour condensed tomato and Middletown tomme cheese; and a tomato shortcake.
