Dosas are a vegetarian specialty of South Indian cuisine, but just because they’re vegetarian doesn’t mean they’re unsubstantial. Spicy, savoy and sometimes a little sweet, dosas make for a surprisingly hearty meal. Here are five of our favorites.

Try the mysore masala dosa filled with a spicy potato and onion mixture.

Dosa Place
While the name of the restaurant doens’t get points for originality, Dosa Place delivers a great line up of savory dosa.

Saravana Bhavan
One of Silicon Valley’s most popular South Indian restaurants with a long menu of dosa choices.

Tirupathi Bhimas
The andra kara dosa looks like pizza, minus the cheese. The crepe is cooked with peas, bell peppers, red onions and mushrooms

Udupi Palace
My favorite is the spicy vegetable masala dosa. The variety of vegetables (cauliflower, peas, onions, potatoes) is hearty and filling and the moderate chile pepper heat enlivens what would be a rather bland mass of crepes and vegetables.
