San Jose had its sixth homicide of the year late Monday night, when a 20-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting. Police have yet to release many details about the shooting, which occurred at the Cabana Apartments on Poco Way, located near Clyde Abuckle Elementary School.

The rate of homicides within San Jose has jumped dramatically compared to a year ago, when there were 20 total. That amount was the lowest since 2000, a somewhat odd statistic considering police staffing was reduced last year yet there were 28 homicides in 2009, when more police were on the streets.

The Mercury News reported the man killed Monday was the seventh person to die due to homicide this year, after a man died earlier this month from stab wound injuries stemming from an incident in 2010.
