Last week, the city officials said they want to close Club Wet after a New Years Eve incident left a patron in hospital with a punctured cheek and throat. On Saturday, the problem shifted to the Mexicali Club. Police received reports that a man with a gun was trying to enter the establishment. By the time they arrived, two people were lying dead and a third was injured from gunshot wounds. A third victim was later found dead in an SUV a block away. The wounded victim is still in critical condition.
Police are concerned, as the incident this raises the number of homicides in the city to four in 2011, and we are not even halfway through January. Last year, in contrast, there were 21 homicides throughout the entire year. Police spokesman Sgt. Ronnie Lopez later called this, “an out-of-the-ordinary, very unusual, very violent weekend.”
