Is San Jose Heading toward a Plastic Bag Ban?

They’ve tried it before and they’re trying it again. City Council is considering a partial ban on plastic bags, in an effort to cut back on the ubiquitous, non-biodegradable sacks that clog streams and contribute to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The new plan would place a 10 cent surcharge on bags, provided that they are made with 40 percent recycled materials. According to some estimates only 1 to 7 percent of all bags used in San Jose are recycled.

A public meeting on the subject is planned for 6:00 pm this Thursday at City Hall.
