Home to Apple, Google, eBay and more, Silicon Valley is a global economic force. However, our region’s local economy does not run on tech alone. There are myriad local businesses in the South Bay—all of them an important part of the Valley economy. From independent bookstores and children’s toy shops to vintage record stores, small businesses in Silicon Valley offer goods for every occasion and gifts for every taste.

Saturday, Nov. 28, is “Small Business Saturday,” which means independent merchants all over Silicon Valley—and, indeed, all over the country—will give holiday shoppers an extra incentive to shop locally by offering deals. But shopping local shouldn’t just be about saving money. It should be about supporting the community.

Small Business Saturday is held every year—just after Thanksgiving, during the busy shopping weekend between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, shop local and skip the lines at the big box stores and the packaging that comes with online orders.  When you shop local, you not only get to see (or taste!) your gifts before you purchase, you also keep your neighborhood vibrant, and support local hiring and spending. Below, you’ll find a guide to just a handful of local businesses selling items like handmade chocolates, jewelry from local designers, and high quality toys.
