With 132 of golf’s best headed to San Martin to play in the Frys.com Open, which runs Thursday through Sunday, there is no shortage of story lines.

Former stars John Daly and David Duval will look to unveil some old magic and win at the Fry’s.com Open, played this year at CordeValle in San Martin. Recently crowned Players Championship winner Tim Clark has an opportunity to make their 2010 seasons unforgettable. And Troy Matteson will have a chance to defend his 2009 Frys.com Open title.

And then there are the unknowns.

Every field has a few long shots that either played their way into the tournament or received an invite through sponsor exemption. One of those long shots is Isaac Weintraub, a 2004 San Jose State University grad who will be playing in his first PGA Tour event after winning a one-round qualifying event at CordeValle.

“When I think of getting emotional about it, it’s more in terms of my friends and family to see me go from a San Jose State player to a struggling Canadian tour pro to now playing a PGA Tour event,” the left-handed Santa Cruz native says.

Weintraub, who has spent much of the last six years playing in the Canadian Tour and the European Challenge Tour, says he’s playing the best golf of his life.

“This tournament presents a great opportunity for me to make some money and get my name on the map,” Weintraub says, adding that he believes he can compete with the best players in the world.

Matteson captured the Frys.com Open winner’s purse last year in dramatic fashion, beating Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark in a two-hole playoff at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale. Matteson bogeyed the last two holes to put him in a tie with Fowler and Lovemark after 72 holes, and birdied the second playoff hole to win his second career PGA Tour event—and the $900,000 purse.

This year marks the first time in its four-year history that the Frys.com Open won’t be played at the Grayhawk. CordeValle is a par-71 course that is 7,333 yards in length. The longest hole, No. 12, is a mammoth 605-yard par 5. Several holes have streams to the side of the fairway or green, with the most treacherous hazards on holes 9 and 17.

On Thursday and Friday, the earliest tee times will be at 7am. On Saturday and Sunday, the earliest tee times will be bumped up to 9am because nearly half the field will be cut. Also at CordeValle is the Official Pro-Am, a friendly competition featuring groups of three amateurs paired with one pro to be played on Wednesday. Among the list of pros that will participate in the event is nine-time PGA Tour winner Stuart Appleby. The Pro-Am has tee times starting as early as 7:20am and as late as 1pm. For either event, a single day ticket is $35, and children under 14 are free when with a paying adult. An all week badge for the Frys.com Open costs $125.
