Description
Growing up in Germany during World War II, Wilfried Satty’s (1939-1982) imagination was forever stamped by the war-torn urban landscape. After moving to San Francisco in the early sixties and befriending artists and poets like Jess and Allen Ginsberg, Satty became involved in the local counterculture, and developed into an underground publication and poster artist. He also experimented with collage, creating psychedelic works reminiscent of fellow German artist Max Ernst. This exhibition focuses on a selection of collages from Satty’s most ambitious series, Visions of Frisco, which interpret San Francisco Gold Rush history from 1848 to the1890s. These fanciful works capture the opulence and tumult of the Gold Rush. Displayed with a selection of historical writings that were chosen by Satty and supplemented by his friend Walter Medeiros after the artist’s death, Satty captures the spectacle of the Gold Rush while leading the viewer down a path of imaginative historical musings.
