Many salt evaporation ponds have been dredged out of the bay since the turn of the century, and can be seen as distinct pockets on either side of the Guadalupe and Alviso (Steamboat) Slough.

A few acres of wetlands remain, but 95% of San Francisco Bay's wetlands have been dredged out of existence to accommodate the production of salt.
