Stages of Sleep have all the ingredients for a big indie folk jamboree: seven people on stage, uncommon instruments, full band sing/shout-alongs. But the whole thing ends up more orchestrated and complex than the usual rambunctiousness. They've got a concept album and everything! They're like...prog folk? Well, that sounds dumb, so let's just go with "this a cool band out of San Francisco for fans of Edward Sharpe and Beirut." Their first full length, Carousel, came out in 2012 and new stuff is in the offing. (Stephen Layton)
