Local Author Looks Back at 1933 Lynchings

It seems bizarre that one of the most brutal acts of civic violence in American history took place in pastoral San Jose, a small town that had escaped the ravages of the Depression and was enjoying a period of peaceful affluence. But John D. Murphy, author of a book and movie about the 1933 lynching in St. James Park, says that bucolic serenity is part of what triggered the notorious event.

Los Gatos jewelry maker Angela Keller says that being diagnosed with breast cancer put a whole different spin on her creative process.

Keller is a Bay Area regular on the art and wine festival circuit who has been manufacturing Venetian and Italian glass bead jewelry under the name Dolce Beada for years. But it wasn’t until she came down with cancer in 2009 that she really understood the true value of her work, Keller says.

State Solar Plan Spiked

The 46-year-old electrician and solar technician, like a lot of green-collar workers, had admittedly held high hopes that Property Assessed Clean Energy would infuse the overcrowded sustainable energy industry with a slew of much-needed jobs.

But to count on it doing so, he says, would have been “just plain stupid.” As it turns out, Bulterman’s skepticism was well founded.
