With the San Bruno fire under control, the Red Cross and other agencies are stepping in to help residents pick up the pieces and try to restore some normalcy to their lives following the San Bruno fire.. There is no precise casualty count yet, and it will be late Friday before the police and fire departments can comb the area to determine the impact of the fire.

Reed Rejects the Release of Police Records

Despite campaign promises of greater transparency, a panel headed by Mayor Chuck Reeds rejects two requests from local residents that the SJPD release information to them. In the case of a 911 call claimed as a false report, Vice Mayor Judy Chirco called the request for information “almost vindictive.” The SJPD argues that 911 calls are exempt from disclosure.

Local School Achieves Top Honors

On Thursday, KIPP Heartwood Academy of East San Jose was recognized by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as one of just 21 California schools that have shown a dramatic growth in achievements among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for progress made by its students since 2005, particularly in the core subjects of English and mathematics.
