Description

Celebrating his recent gift of a newly discovered pair of stunning six-panel screens by Sakaki Hyakusen (1697–1752), UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus James Cahill presents an illustrated lecture exploring the influence of China on Hyakusen and eighteenth-century Japanese painting. While Cahill has long been recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on Chinese painting, his research on the influence of China on eighteenth-century Japanese painting is also seminal. His publications in this area include Scholar-Artists of Japan: The Nanga Schooland Sakaki Hyakusen and Early Nanga Painting.

Cosponsored by the Center for Chinese Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, and the Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley.
