Description
Two acts that helped spearhead the electro/hip-hop movement, originators Egyptian Lover and Newcleus headline the quintessential dance party on Friday, July 11thIt’s no wonder that one of this year’s biggest artists, M.I.A, enlisted Egyptian Lover to get the crowd going on her current tour. The Los Angeles native wears many hats as producer, DJ, and dancer. Under pseudonym Egyptian Lover, he released the classic songs “Egypt, Egypt,” “My Beat Goes Boom,” and “What is a DJ If He Can’t Scratch?”
Not only do these songs draw influence from the early vocal stylings of rap, Egyptian Lover took-it a step further incorporating electro beats coming-out of the underground club culture at the time, from the likes of electronic predecessors Kraftwerk.
Still in High School, Brooklyn friends from the class of 76’ started DJ collective Jam-On Productions. Developing street credibility by playing local block parties, they released some tracks with aide from Producer Joe Webb and soon formed the band Newcleus. Gaining notoriety with smash single “Jam On It,” they were asked to join the first-ever hip-hop tour featuring fellow cohorts Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Fat Boy, and Whodini. They are also recognized as the first hip-hop act to play all their own instruments.
