Silicon Valley can lay claim to not one but two winegrowing regions. There’s the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and the Livermore Valley to the east. I’d wager that people know more about the wines of the Santa Cruz Mountains than the wines of Livermore. Here’s a chance to get familiar with the many wines of the region.

Labor Day weekend marks the 31st-annual Livermore Valley Harvest Wine Celebration. Sunday, Sept. 2, and Monday, Sept. 3, between noon and 5pm, area wineries will offer wine, food, art and music to ticket holders. Here’s how it breaks down: On Sept. 2, 29 wineries will host festivities at their tasting rooms across Livermore Valley, and 12 more wineries will be pouring at either Concannon Vineyard or Wente Vineyards on Tesla Road.

All locations will offer wine tasting, food vendors, local artisans and festive music. Celebration guests are invited to ride complimentary shuttle buses between the wineries. Free parking will be available at Robertson Park in Livermore, where guests can board buses and transfer between routes during the day.

On Sept. 3, 38 Livermore Valley wineries will present a more intimate affair that includes events like a “bottle your own wine” at Cedar Mountain Winery, El Sol Winery and Eckert Estate Winery, a beekeeping demonstration at El Sol Winery and a barrel tasting at Mitchell Katz Winery.

The Harvest Wine Celebration is a fundraiser for the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association. All 2012 Harvest Wine Celebration tickets are good for admission both days—there are no single-day tickets. Tickets are $55 each when purchased in advance, $65 at the event. Designated driver tickets are $10 and are also valid both days.

Food at all winery locations will be locally prepared and priced at under $8. Admission price includes a commemorative Livermore Valley wine glass, tastings of at least two wine varietals from each participating winery, official event program and discounts on wine purchases. Wineries are open only to ticket holders with event wristbands and no outside food is permitted.

Tickets are available online at www.LVwine.org and at all participating Livermore Valley wineries, the Wine Steward in Pleasanton, First Street Wine Company and the Winemaker’s PourHouse in Livermore, and at Bay Area Safeway stores. For information, cal 925.447.WINE.
