A man suspected of robbing and stabbing a clerk at a San Jose jewelry store on Monday night was arrested a day later by police.

The 62-year-old male victim was stabbed multiple times around 8:50 p.m. at Gomez Jewelry Store in the 100 block of South White Road. The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose with injuries that were initially believed to be life-threatening, but as of Wednesday police expect him to survive. He remains at the hospital.

After stabbing the victim, the attacker stole items from him, including his car, police said.

Through an anonymous tip, police were able to identify the suspect as Juan Antonia Ornelas, 27, of San Jose. He was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail Tuesday night on suspicion of attempted murder, armed robbery and carjacking, police said. He remains in custody.

The victim’s car was recovered near Story Road and McGinness Avenue.

Police encourage jewelry store owners to maintain a working video surveillance system, call police if they witness unusual activity, and note names and license plate numbers of people they believe to be suspicious.
