A shooting that left three people dead in a parking garage near San Jose State University appears to have been motivated by a domestic dispute, according to university officials.

The shooting happened at about 8:30 p.m. Monday on the fifth story of the 10th Street garage at the corner of East San Fernando and South 10th streets.

Using a small handgun, the suspect, identified as 54-year-old Napoleon Lavarias Caliguiran, shot his 25-year-old wife, Marcory Tarlit Caliguiran, and a 26-year-old man, Thomas Kyle Williams, who were both inside a vehicle owned by the couple, university spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said at a news conference.

All three were found on the fifth floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Marcory Caliguiran and Williams were pronounced dead at the garage. Napoleon Lavarias Caliguiran was pronounced dead at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. The handgun was recovered inside the vehicle.

Both Marcory Caliguiran and Williams were SJSU business students and graduating seniors, Harris said. No one involved in the shooting had a criminal record and there is no record of previous domestic violence involving the couple, Harris said. All three were residents of San Jose.

Harris said Marcory Caliguiran’s family is in the Philippines.

She said police are investigating the case, the first of its kind in the university’s 150-year history, as a murder-suicide.

“We don’t know a lot and we may never know a lot about the series of events that led to what happened in the garage on Tuesday night,” Harris said.

The university has been criticized for the way it notified students on campus about the shooting, but Harris said the shooting was an isolated incident and no students were in danger.

The San Jose Police Department is assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the San Jose State University Police Department at (408) 924-2168.
