Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library.  The only entrance requirement is interest.” She failed to mention a viable city budget.

In San Jose, only Downtown’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library is open seven days a week. The other libraries have been forced to cut back hours, and now operate only four and a half days a week. City Librarian Jane Light now warns that with the current budget deficit, even those libraries could cut their opening hours down to just three days a week.

While the cuts would not affect the Main Library, Light also believes that four new libraries, including two under construction, will be unable to open this year.
