Earthquakes Advance to Semifinals
Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski’s header in the 81st minute propelled the San Jose Earthquakes into the Eastern Conference Finals, stunning the New York Red Bulls. Wondo’s goal gave the Earthquakes a 3-1 win and a 3-2 series win based on aggregate score. San Jose’s Bobby Convey scored twice, including a laser past goalie Bouna Coundoul that put the Earthquakes ahead 2-0 in the 76th minute. But moments later, Rafael Marquez responded with a goal that tied the aggregate score at 2 apiece. That set up Wondo’s heroics, which pushed the Quakes into the semifinals of the MLS playoffs against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in Colorado.

Luck Leads Stanford to Blowout of Arizona
Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns as Stanford demolished Arizona 42-17 on Saturday at Stanford Stadium. Cardinal running back Stepfan Taylor rushed for four touchdowns in the victory. The Cardinal (8-1) moved up to No. 6 in the BCS Standings, and will more than likely play in a BCS bowl game if it wins out. Stanford heads on the road to play Arizona State next Saturday before playing the “Big Game” against California on Nov. 20.

Sharks Offense Shut Out Twice
After being held scoreless in two straight road games, the Sharks salvaged an abysmal week with a 5-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Patrick Marleau scored two first-period goals and Antero Niittymaki stopped 33 shots to preserve the win. In the Sharks 2-0 loss to St. Louis on Thursday, Captain Joe Thornton was suspended two games for a check to the head of Blues forward David Perron. Thornton will sit out the next Sharks game against Anaheim on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at HP Pavilion.

Stanford Finishes Perfect Pac-10 Season
On Friday, the stars aligned as Oregon State and Stanford, both 7-0 in the Pac-10, squared off to decide the women’s soccer regular season conference champion. The Beavers came into the game with six consecutive shutouts, but it took Christen Press less than three minutes to break that streak. Press added a goal in the second half to vault Stanford to a 2-0 win at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Stanford. The Cardinal completed its undefeated Pac-10 season with a 3-0 win against Oregon on Sunday. Next up for Stanford is the NCAA Tournament, and the Cardinal will likely enter the tournament with the No. 1 overall seed.

Freshman Scores 30 in SJSU’s Exhibition Win
Freshman guard Keith Shamburger scored nine of his 30 points in the final five minutes to help the SJSU men’s basketball team hold off Whitman College 109-92 on Saturday. SJSU guard Adrian Oliver, fifth in the nation in points per game a year ago, scored 24 points before fouling out with just under 10 minutes to go. Whitman made 18 3-pointers, but it couldn’t make up for the Spartans size advantage as SJSU won the rebounding battle 43-28. The Spartans begin their regular season on the road against Eastern Washington on Friday. They play their first home game against the University of San Francisco on Nov. 17.
