Ikea announced that eight of its stores in California will be adding solar panels to their roofs to generate electricity. Among the stores is the East Palo Alto location, which serves the South Bay area. The Palo Alto branch of Ikea was launched in 2003 and occupies 10.5 acres.  Ikea said that the total output of its solar panel initiative in California will be 6.65 million kilowatt hours, or enough to power 580 homes.

Other Ikea branches to go solar are Emeryville, West Sacramento, Burbank, Costa Mesa, Covina and San Diego. Additionally, the company’s distribution center in Tejon will also be installing solar panels.
