About 1,700 residents of East Palo Alto have been ordered by the San Mateo County to evacuate their homes immediately. The received the same terrifying message that was sent to residents in San Bruno just a month ago, because of the gas pipe explosion. Now it appears that it was the exact same message.

The county was planning to inform residents about an upcoming meeting of the council and redevelopment agency on October 19, but the operator who was making the automated calls did not realize until too late that the San Bruno message was still in the system. Hundreds of calls were made before the mistake was rectified.

Emergency Services Coordinator Bill O’Callahan regretted the mistake and stated that there will be an official apology. “This will not happen again,” he said.
