The acquisition comes immediately in the wake of the purchase of 3Par for $2.35 billion, after a tense bidding war with Dell. HP will pay $43.50 a share for ArcSight, 24 percent higher than the stock’s closing price on Friday.

Observers are suggesting that the recent acquisitions signal a trend in HP to expand its core operations beyond personal computers and printer ink. By expanding into data storage (3Par) and computer security (ArcSight), the company is beginning to piece together a full hardware-software package geared toward businesses.
