There’s a lot of excitement about the Giving Pledge, an initiative by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to encourage billionaires to donate or bequeath at least half of their fortunes to charity. They’ve been joined by a virtual Who’s Who in Megabucks that transcends backgrounds, careers, and politics.

There’s George Lucas and Barron Hilton, Pierre Omidyar and T. Boone Pickens (who famously said, “I’m not a big fan of inherited wealth. It generally does more harm than good”).

And then there are the conspicuously absent. Meg Whitman is one of them. Although she has spent close to $100 million on her campaign to be governor, she has announced that neither she nor her husband has any plans to leave their wealth to the less fortunate. It is, however, true that at the rate she is going, she may not have much left come November.
