Description

Bay area treasure Beth Custer lent her distinctive clarinet to the Club Foot Orchestra's original soundtracks. Now that we're in the midst of a major revival of interest in silent film, it's particularly timely that Custer and her six person Ensemble are performing the score Custer composed for Kote Mikaberidze's 1929 opus My Grandmother. The made in the USSR comedy exemplified the kind of material Stalin wanted stamped out. Banned until the 1970s, My Grandmother is a cross between surreal slapstick and Murnau's The Last Laugh, as if assayed by Dziga Vertov. Part of the evening's experience are a walk around the grounds: My Grandmother is being shown al fresco at the Lilian Fontain theater at the Montalvo Arts Center, where Custer has been an artist in residence. High class, yet insanely inexpensive. - Richard von Busack sanjose.com
