Review: Dio Deka
Reviews Jul 26, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
When it opened four years ago Dio Deka represented a new breed of Greek restaurant: modern, upscale and sexy. The Los Gatos place became an instant hit where the previous Italian restaurant in the Hotel Los Gatos failed to generate any sparks. Today Dio Deka is part of a new resurgence of high-end Greek restaurants in Silicon Valley.

Livefeed: Meat and Cigs
Reviews Jul 26, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
I knew that industrial meat production in America was a disaster—a disaster for the environment, for the people who work in the feedlots and chicken warehouses and for the animals unlucky enough to live their short, miserable lives in cruel confinement. But it takes actually seeing how the vast majority of livestock are raised to really turn my stomach and my conscience.

Food & Wine Events: July 21-27
Reviews Jul 20, 2011, by Liza Mock
We are lucky to live in such a bountiful state. Where else can you choose between two incredible wine paired dinners, learn how to grow the perfect tomato, take a tour of gorgeous edible gardens and learn about wine blending at all in one week? Some might say we’re spoiled, but for us it’s just another South Bay week July 20-27.

Livefeed: Myth Taverna and Lounge
Reviews Jul 19, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
The field of high-end Greek restaurants is suddenly getting crowded. Evvia in Palo Alto was the first entry. Then came the Dio Deka, a posh restaurant started by several Evvia defectors. Now there’s the new Myth Taverna and Lounge in downtown San Jose, and there is yet another Greek-themed restaurant in the works nearby.

Review: Park Place
Reviews Jul 19, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
The city of Cupertino calls itself the “heart of the valley,” but strangely the city itself has no center. If you go looking for the city’s core, you won’t find it. There is no downtown. No central meeting place. But every city needs a center, and I nominate Park Place restaurant. It’s not a particularly civic-minded place, just a bar that serves food. But since Park Place is located at De Anza and Stevens Creek boulevards, the de facto geographical center of town, it’s as good a choice as any.

We are lucky to live in such a bountiful state. Where else can you frolic at an outdoor festival, learn how to cook with basil in a gorgeous setting, celebrate Bastille day with a gourmet meal, and have your pick of gorgeous wineries to taste at all in one week? Some might say we’re spoiled, but for us it’s just another South Bay week July 13-20.

Livefeed: Lunch Movement
Reviews Jul 13, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
School-lunch reform has become one of the rallying cries of the good food movement. It is also a subject of great interest to me personally. Food Forward plans to devote an entire episode to the subject. It is a pretty easy cause to get behind, right? I mean, who can argue against feeding kids healthy, fresh food?

Review: Napoletana Pizzeria
Reviews Jul 13, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
In his previous career, commercial pilot Costas Eleftheriadis taught students how to fly at the Hayward airport. But earning a living in the cockpit can often be difficult so he recently became a student himself—of pizza. The results can be sampled at Napoletana Pizzeria in Mountain View where Eleftheriadis is now a certified Pizzaiolo or pizza chef.

Livefeed: Trip Notes
Reviews Jul 13, 2011, by Stett Holbrook
After two months visiting farms, ranches, restaurants and schools across California the Food Forward road trip is shifting gears. I’m parking the Airstream and letting my family out while my partner Greg Roden and I and the rest of the Food Forward team refocus our efforts on getting the pilot show aired. We still plan to visit several cities later this year to screen our pilot episode on urban agriculture.

Review: Tamarine
Reviews Jul 13, 2011, by Steve Palopoli
Creativity moves at a frenetic pace at Tamarine; most dishes are lucky to last a few months. On a recent visit, several of the dishes I sampled had been added within the last two months. The geographical reach of the menu is fascinating, as well; despite being rooted solidly in Vietnamese culinary tradition, there are tastes from India, Thailand and across South Asia, as well as the West.
