It’s a one-two punch of contemporary jazz at Montalvo Arts Center, as saxophonist David Sanborn and pianist David Benoit take audiences on a magic carpet ride through the world of pop-inflected jazz fusion. Both Sanborn and Benoit have long been described as the antitheses of what purists call “real jazz players,” but then again, purists are inherently adverse to nearly anything that isn’t covered in centuries-old dust. Crossover appeal isn’t flawed by nature, to be sure, and nobody can deny Sanborn and Benoit’s immense popularity when it comes to record sales. Sanborn’s new album release, Here and Gone, is characteristically diverse, with guest appearances by Joss Stone and Eric Clapton, among others.
