There is something intense about Blackbird Raum's total lack of amplification. They shout along to what seems like a random assortment of acoustic instruments-banjo, accordion, washtub bass, mandolin, washboard-making music unlike any other band out there, even other folk-punk bands, which is the closest scene in which they might fit. Really, they're more like an anarchist crust-punk jug band-rustic and futuristic all at once. Blackbird Raum may not be as loud as other punk bands, but the raw energy is there. It's no wonder they've gotten so big in their hometown of Santa Cruz.
