San Jose singer-songwriter Aprylle Gilbert plays the kind of ambient, catchy indie folk that Suzanne Vega pioneered in the '80s, but she's neither as arty nor as obtuse. Instead, Gilbert sings passionately emotional tunes about real-life struggles and redemption. Underneath the straight talk, there's usually a deeper message, and Gilbert maintains a certain positivist philosophy even when singing about breakups in "Bye Bye Baby" or last-ditch efforts in "One More Time Around."
