With Clothing Designer Barbara Beccio
Clothing designer Barbara Beccio has an MFA in Costume and Lighting Design for Theatre, which has led her to explore not only period clothing shapes but also unusual shapes that stretch the normal considerations of construction. Today she will demonstrate her clothing design and construction process to artfully envelope the 3 dimensional shapes of the human form.

Fashion Design Knitting - Machine Knitting in the Round
Lynda Grose Silva is an Associate Professor of California College of the Arts, author and industry consultant on sustainability. Today, Lynda and her students will “perform” on a Brother Silver Reed machine by knitting on command. Watch the pattern emerge as they “play.” Once the bane of Luddites, knitting devices have been around since the 1300’s. Today’s knitting machines use needles, cams and punch cards to create complex patterns of wearable texture and topology. Contrary to what you might think, these machines don’t do all the work for you. Using a knitting machine is an art and a skill of its own.

Create Fragile, Temporary Gowns from Pattern-Makers Tissue
July 31 Noon-4pm
When Amy Williams, chair of Fashion at San Francisco’s California College of Arts wanted to free the creative spirit of her students and get them to think spatially in the moment about designing, she invented an ingenious way to do that — fast creation of opulent gowns, made in a day with just pattern makers tissue and tape. The result is not only an education for students, but also a playful and performative experience in the process of fashion creation. The museum will be filled with pink as students from the California College of the Arts, working with experienced faculty, use the humblest of materials, a few simple tools, their imagination and basic apparel construction techniques to create fabulous paper gowns in just one afternoon. Bring your questions and prepare to be inspired as you gain new insight into the design and construction of your favorite frock.
