Although the quartet hadn’t recorded with a guitarist since Robben Ford left the group in the early 1980’s, Mike Stern’s brilliantly articulated staccato lines proved to be a perfect foil and warranted a break with tradition. The resulting record (Lifecycle, Heads Up International, 2008) earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” and garnered plenty of critical acclaim besides. The reason is simple, this is no mere guest appearance, on the contrary, it’s a summit meeting of (quoting keyboardist Russell Ferrante) “five musicians with a genuine rapport.”
