Description
Yaelisa & Caminos FlamencosHomenaje a los Flamencos de la Bodega
(2012, World Premiere)
Presented by Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos
Emmy Award-winning director/dancer Yaelisa pays tribute to the founders and creators of the legendary Cuevas Room, which was located at the Olde Spaghetti Factory in North Beach. This production honors founders dancer/singer Ernesto Hernandez, guitarist Freddie Mejia and dancer/singer Isa Mura, Yaelisa’s mother, and provides a historical perspective of the importance of this proving ground for flamenco, and its lasting impact on flamenco in North America.
This special evening brings together the figures, the atmosphere and a retelling of the many mythic stories that took place within its walls. Spoken word, projections and historical recreations, blend with appearances by many of the original artists who passed through its legendary stage. Rounding out the cast of more than 25 are: Keni “El Lebrijano”, Juan Moro, Roberto Zamora, David Gutierrez, Sara de Luis, Raquel Lopez, Sarita Ayala, Don Fontowitz, Rubina Valenzuela, with special appearances by Kina Mendez, singer from Spain; dancer Melissa Cruz; Yaelisa, Artistic Director/dancer, and living legend Ernesto Hernandez.
"The original Los Flamencos de la Bodega included Ernesto Hernandez, Sara de Luis, David Serva and Freddie Mejia, and my mother, Isa Mura. Isa and Ernesto Hernandez partnered and performed at the Cuevas Room on and off during its entire history. My mother developed her craft there, and became the most revered American flamenco singer for generations. Her impact on the future Bay Area flamenco scene, along with the contributions of her many colleagues, provided the groundwork for the current flourishing Bay Area flamenco community." stated Yaelisa.
