World Factory presents over 30 international artists whose works respond to the issues and conflicts within the global “free market” economy. The outsourcing of manufacturing from “First World” to “Third World” countries causes serious impacts on both sides: pollution, displacement of populations, excessive exploitation of natural resources, and uneven development resulting in further divisions between the rich and the poor. Concurrently, the formation of a global consumerist culture is exerting significant influences on local cultures. World factories are not only producing material goods for the consumer market but are also producing a new social consciousness and mobilization.
