ARTS & SKILLS SERVICESpring 2012 CALL for PARTICIPATION
Email RSVP to [email protected]
Bay Area artist educator Allison SMITH will be leading a series of workshops for women who have served in the military, their friends, and allies on the theme of trench art: objects made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians, where the object’s making and materiality are directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. SMITH has produced large-scale projects on the connections between craft and war for over a decade that have been exhibited in major museums and universities across the U.S. and in Europe. This spring she is partnering with FOR-SITE Foundation, Swords to Plowshares, and their ongoing initiative SHOUT!, along with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, to continue her ARTS & SKILLS Service. This project restages a WWII collaboration between SFMOMA and the American Red Cross in which hundreds of Bay Area artists and craftspeople were enlisted to teach hands-on workshops to returning GIs. Through skill shares, public conversations, and interactive sculptural installations, ARTS & SKILLS Service brings together people who have experienced war from the “home front” with those who have lived it in any capacity, whether deployed overseas or stationed on our soil.
In each of the Spring 2012 workshops, SMITH and collaborators Amber Cady and Helena Keeffe will present trench art objects as “conversation pieces,” then demonstrate many of the skills needed for making the objects. Artworks created by participants may be exhibited at Fort Point in the Presidio in May 2012 as part of the International Orange exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. Workshops are free and all materials are provided.

During World War I, British soldiers recovering in hospitals created elaborately beaded pin cushions in a variety of forms including hearts and stars, while Turkish prisoners of war created colorful beaded snakes and lizards. Whether to pass the time, stave off boredom, or survive the situation, handiwork has an age-old connection to comfort and healing. In this three- day workshop, participants will create soft sculptures using fabric, glass beads, sequins, embroidery, and beaded crochet techniques in order to make their own contemporary love tokens and souvenirs of survival.
