Description

Masami Teraoka borrows from traditional Japanese watercolor and ukiyo-e (wood block prints), Western oil painting, and Renaissance motifs to tackle contemporary issues occupying the media and dominating our political discussions. Teraoka incorporates modern images like cell phones, condoms, and ice-cream cones into classical scenes depicting Adam and Eve and Venus de Milo. Set in large gilded frames, some images are grouped together in tableaux that create entire narratives. This exhibition coincides with the publication of Ascending Chaos, the first retrospective of Teraoka's work.
