Description

Spanning playful, tender, and dramatic moods, “With a Little Help from My Friends” showcases the Natasha Carlitz Dance Ensemble's noted athleticism, humour, and musicality. The concert features a number of premieres, including:

- Julia & Mandelbrot: A kaleidoscopic exploration of fractals' whirling mathematical patterns and repetitions, this piece portrays physically the cerebral concept of infinite recursion. Choreographed by Natasha Carlitz.

- Windows: A look at city living and the way neighbours' lives bump up against one another, leading to strangely intimate relationships. Choreographed by Annie Thatcher-Stephens.

- Home: The journey of an alien searching the cosmos. Choreographed by Jen Costillo, who has also designed electronics used in the costumes.

- The Space Between My Heart: An ensemble work inspired by the call and response between singers and the imagery of echoing voices, longing, and an inability to find physical and emotional connections. Choreographed by Erica Pinigis.

The Ensemble also brings back Carlitz works that have delighted audiences of all ages in the Bay Area and far beyond:

- Off Your Rocker: Silly and exuberant, a playful romp on unstable rocking props. "Proof that creativity knows no bounds," according to Gary Masters of sjDanceCo.

- Plurality: A formal study of unison in a growing ensemble, driven by the power of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

- Peace, from One to Z: A moving meditation, set to an achingly beautiful wordless aria by Villa-Lobos.

- Xylophonia: A lighthearted and surprising dance for five creatures and three props.

"[A] breathtaking show... with a spirit of enthusiasm, romance and joy... resonated with a sense of ecstasy and challenge." — Rania Khallaf, Al-Ahram Weekly, Cairo, Egypt
