Description

Wild Wild East presents a series of visually compelling works, representative of a re-thinking process, by four established artists. Collectively reflected in their works are a procession of changes that fuse the East and the West, and a close questioning of cultural values in contemporary society.

Throughout a ceaseless ideological revolution, well-known Beijing artists Huang Yan and Liu Xiaodong continue to re-examine their identity as well as the psychic landscape of Chinese society, which has undergone radical changes. Their series underscore the evolution of Chinese cultural heritage and the formation of a new one.

Korean-American artist Debbie Han’s celadon sculptures explore the issue of perception and cultural notions. By creating Venus busts with facial features of diverse races, she redefines classical ideals through combining Western aesthetics with Eastern characteristics, thus creating a singular kind of beauty...
