Description
Wikipedia is one of the five most visited websites on Earth, and the largest encyclopedia and collaborative knowledge project in history. In the age of the internet and new media technology, Wikipedia has pioneered a successful and open model that relies on the knowledge and insight of many. But what can we learn from its success and how has Wikipedia transformed where we get our information from? In international affairs, what can we learn from Wikipedia and its 100,000 volunteer editors about how international events are reported, perceived and posted to the website from other countries? Jay Walsh joins the World Affairs Council to provide an overview of the history of the growth of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation. With editions in over 270 languages, over 14 million articles, and over 340 million unique visitors each month, Wikipedia has not only become an extraordinary learning tool but a manifestation of the power of global collaboration. Join us for a fascinating talk on the future of global online collaboration. This event was developed by members of the World Affairs Council's Young Professionals International Forum (IF) -- a volunteer subcommittee of young professionals with a passion for international affairs. To learn about other IF events and ways to get involved, please join our Facebook Group or our Yahoo Group.
This event is co-sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation and will be followed by a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception.
Advanced registration is recommended for guaranteed seating.
