Description

The heart of West Portal is a shopping district three blocks long filled with all the ingredients of a delightful small town: restaurants, movie theater, bookstore, pubs and Mom and Pop shops. The weekend of April 7-9, this charming district will add to its appeal by hosting the West Portal Sidewalk Fine Arts & Crafts Fair—a boutique handcrafted art alfresco experience.

Now in its 29th year, the three-day open-air art marketplace runs Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on West Portal Avenue between 15th and Ulloa featuring the works of more than 30 artists displaying photography, paintings, ceramics, jewelry and more. The event presents a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of West Portal, to meet artists one-on-one and discover a handcrafted treasure that calls to you. The show is free to the public and is presented by the West Portal Avenue Association.

Wall Art
Justine Tatarsky creates hand-painted ceramic tile art ranging from individual tiles to large tile murals that can be hung on the wall or installed in kitchens, bathrooms, etc. People have said that her designs remind them of Hindu, Arabic, South American, Egyptian, Russian and Native American art and her style of Picasso, Chagall, Dali, Gaudi, or Modigliani. She describes her creations as sensual, playful and evocative. “More often I am inspired to work by an emotional impulse, rather than a theme or concept,” says Justine. “I usually draw (in pencil or felt pen) directly on the surface of fired paving tiles, and simply allow my hand to follow rhythms present in my body and breath…There are times when the dancing line seems to be directed by a spirit beyond what I can define.”

Clothing
Krys Mamaril has created a collection of stylish and sustainable separates and accessories focused on texture and comfort. Ditching the traditional fashion calendar, her line of clothing, named CHAN + KRYS offers mix and match seasonless pieces that reinvent and extend the conventional wardrobe. Core values of the brand include:
• Eco-Friendly - Use of natural, biodegradable fibers such as Organic Cotton, Hemp and Soy etc. Use of custom and mill end fabrics.
• Locally Sourced - Locally and ethically made in the New York Garment District or in San Francisco, a combination of made-to-order and small batch production
• Zero Waste - Committed to a Zero Waste Policy, responsibly recycling and repurposing excess materials
Visit the event and see CHAN + KRYS creations. Admire their environmentally and ethically sound clothing/jewelry and take home wearable art that helps you look and feel good while doing good, without sacrificing quality and style.

Jewelry
Judith Poe creates jewelry for the feeling it brings to the people who wear it. “The perfect piece of jewelry has the ability to instantly make us feel special and empowered,” she says. “In a world that is always telling us how to be - to have the ability to choose a personal piece that speaks to you makes jewelry more than just fashion.” Judith's organic beginning started just three years ago after taking a jewelry class. She started redesigning her own jewelry and posting her
creations on social media. The feedback was phenomenal, and soon friends were sending in custom orders. Today, her pieces are being carried in select boutiques and shown in art festivals across the U.S. Handmade with utmost care to detail many of her pieces are one-of-a-kind and all of her jewelry is handcrafted in San Francisco.

Leather
Paul Wagner’s KAMEL is the first leather design and production atelier in North America to work exclusively with camel leather. It was built around a pursuit to handcraft leather goods that are unique, high quality, beautiful, and made with mindfully-sourced materials.
Camel leather is up to three times stronger than cow leather and with a unique grain and density making it softer and more supple than cowhide. UNESCO has reported that supporting camel industry in arid environments actually stands as a positive measure to fight desertification. KAMEL’s leather is ethically-sourced (camels are not raised for leather production), tanned from available hides and with a chrome-free process that leaves it chemical-free. Water from this process is recycled and waste is composted. “As we seek beauty in our craft and uphold high standards of artisanal quality in what we make, we are pleased to bring this ideal of handcrafted closer to you, too.” Shop with KAMEL for exquisite clutches, journals and accessories.
