Description
As a trombonist, bandleader, educator, producer and label chief, trombonist Wayne Wallace is a Northern Californian institution through and through. His Latin Jazz Septet, in turn, unites some of the finest locally based instrumentalists for a crisp exploration of Afro-Caribbean, jazz and Cuban folkloric styles. The three-time Grammy-winning Wallace helped shaped the region's Latin jazz sound as a member of ensembles led by Pete Escovedo and John Santos, and as a member of Conjunto Cespedes. As the founder and head producer of the Patois Records label, he's nurtured the creative expression of artists such as vocalist Alex Weber Morales, multi-percussionist Mitch Shiner and 2018 Summer Fest artist Kat Parra.
Wallace took several trips to Cuba in the mid-'90s to absorb the island's music and culture. He brings that deep knowledge to his septet with longtime musical comrades Mary Fettig (flute), Mads Tolling (violin), Murray Lowe (piano), David Belove (bass), Colin Douglas (drums, percussion) and Michael Spiro (percussion). Like Wallace, Belove is a faculty member at University of Indiana.
Join this trombone and cross-genre master and his merry musical associates as they traverse sacred traditions, profane lore and new histories at 2018 Summer Fest.
