Description
Around the Fire features a major production of The Wanderings of Odysseus, originally produced in 1992 by the Mark Taper Forum for the Getty Museum in Malibu, directed by Rush Rehm (now Artistic Director, Stanford Summer Theater). Adapted by Oliver Taplin, The Wanderings of Odysseus received rave notices in the press after its debut. The Los Angeles Times called the production “an essential experience for anyone who cares about the never-ending project of keeping the great stories alive … An intelligent directness guides everything … superbly clear … profoundly sensual.”The story of Odysseus’ return to his island home of Ithaca after the Trojan War offers thrilling trials and adventures, full of stark human dilemmas and superhuman encounters: Circe, the Sirens, Calypso, the Cyclops, the deadly whirl of Charybdis, the idyllic island of the Phaeacians. These magical names evoke the world of ancient myth, but they also speak to the ever-present desire for new experiences, family, and homecoming.
Built on the ensemble work of the SST company (including such Bay Area favorites as L. Peter Callender, Alex Ubokudom, Courtney Walsh, and Paul Baird), The Wanderings of Odysseus features live percussion, beautifully wrought language, and striking physicality. Directed by Rush Rehm, with set design by Erik Flatmo (A.C.T., Berkeley Rep, CalShakes, SST’s Electra and Restoration Comedy) and costumes by Connie Strayer (TheatreWorks, Opera San Jose, and many SST seasons), The Wanderings of Odysseus opens in Stanford’s intimate Nitery Theater on July 22 and runs through August 15, 2010.
