Description
Many of us are in shock and with heavy hearts after hearing about the tragedies today in Connecticut and China. The truth is, we are not scared that the world is going to end, we are panicked that it will stay the same.Voluspa: A Ghost Dance for 2012 opens next Wednesday. A lot of people have asked about the name. Voluspa is the Nordic prophesy of the volva. It tells the story of the creation of the world and its coming end. The Native American Ghost Dance is a ceremony for the regeneration of the earth, and, subsequently, the restoration of the earth’s caretakers to their former life of bliss. We were inspired by the way it, a dance, spread like wildfire throughout different tribes as a form of resistance and protest against the injustices committed against them.
With that be said, please join us for an evening of dance, music and ritual as we mark the 2012 solstice through a circle dance that brings our current tumultuous times starkly into focus. Whether it be the Mayan, the Hopi, the Norse, the Book of Revelation, Wovoka, or contemporary climate scientists, many cultures have the destruction/regeneration story deeply rooted in their mythology. Through prophesy and truth telling a diverse group of artists will come together to acknowledge and pay tribute to past and present struggles and work towards renewal. And so we look to December 21st - as marked by the Mayan Calendar - to be the end of selfishness and the beginning of brotherhood .
These shows begin outside at the 24th Street BART Plaza - please dress warmly.
