Description
Viva la Musica! will celebrate the holiday season with concerts Dec. 9 and 16 featuring the large-scale work Stella Natalis by Karl Jenkins. Shulamit Hoffman will direct the choir and orchestra. The Dec. 9 concert will take place at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration, 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo; the Dec. 16 program is set for 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 178 Clinton St., Redwood City. Hoffman will offer a pre-concert talk at 3:30 p.m. both days.
Soloists will include Jason Park, trumpet; Shelly Welch, soprano; and Doug Chin and Christian Foster Howes, percussion.
Jenkins, the classically trained master of global “crossover” choral works and perhaps the most performed living composer of choral music, composed Stella Natalis (“Star of birth”) for the holiday season. Featuring choir and string orchestra, trumpet and soprano solos, and an array of percussion, the music is seasonally spiced. Moods range from gentle to magnificent, inspired to whimsical. The lyrics, both secular and sacred, are mostly in English, with some traditional Latin and even Sanskrit and Zulu. There is a close marriage of music and text since the librettist is Carol Barratt, Jenkins’ wife.
The rest of the program will feature traditional Christmas carols by John Rutter, God rest ye, merry by Mark Riese, Jingle Bells for piano duet, and Ale Brider, a Klezmer song.
Tickets are preferred, $25; general, $20; and senior/student/group, $15.
