Description

This special exhibition by renowned artist and printmaker Juan R. Fuentes debuts the evening of the 2016 Cesar Chavez Parade. “Visual Tribute: A Dialogue with Cesar” will showcase more than 20 pieces, spanning four decades, that represent working people, and in particular, the struggle of the United Farmworkers.

Fuentes said this exhibition of relief prints represents an opportunity to present previous work, in a new context.

“I’ve never exhibited a body of work specifically identified with the farmworkers’ struggle. It’s an honor to be invited to do an exhibit on the subject,” he said. “When I began looking for works that address the theme, I found the first and only copy that I have of the collagraph ‘Huelga,’ done in 1973. It was my first artistic expression of solidarity with the farmworker struggle.”

Fuentes grew up in Monterey County, where he said his parents and 11 siblings worked long hours in the agricultural fields picking fruits and vegetables.

“The experience of witnessing firsthand the hardships of living and working in the migrant camps has inspired my visual sensibilities to the continued plight of farmworkers. It’s really been a subject I keep addressing and doing in my work.
